First of all, I would like to acknowledge last week's HSO One-Day Conference! Congrats to all the members who cooperated and a wonderful thank you to our one and only Anthony Chanrasmi for putting all of this success together! The students had a lot of fun and enjoyed spending their day in the shoes of a college student! :)
However, as most of us heard, Magnolia High School had some violence on campus which led to a lockdown. Many of our students that were with us on Friday were thankful to have been on UCI's campus rather than their very own. Some students in my group were mentioning to me other violent acts that they had to experience during their past years in Magnolia High School. One student even said that their area is really dangerous and that you can't go ten minutes without hearing a police or fire siren passing by.
Hearing this really saddened me. I always knew that HSO was important, but it didn't hit me until i heard those words how important the HSO program really IS. Through guiding students in the right path, we help them stray away from such violent activities. HSO is an important program that shows these students that there is more to life than what they experience now. We also show them that they are capable of anything and everything they want to be in the future. They say there is a reason for everything that happens. I feel that there's a reason why our Magnolia students were on our campus last Friday rather than us being on theirs.
With that said, I would like to encourage more people to continue joining our PASSAGE HIGH SCHOOL OUTREACH program. One day a week out of your life, can make a huge difference in these High School students' lives.
Also, for all of you wondering what happened on their campus on Friday, here is an update I found online.
